Healthy eating is not just for those who are figure-conscious, or for those with a diagnosed medical condition that requires them to change their eating habits. Eating wisely is not just for the top-notch athlete who wants to do everything he can to improve his ability. Healthy eating is a worthy and attainable goal for everyone.

My first recommendation when starting a plan to change over to more healthy eating styles is to be one hundred percent honest about your current day to day eating habits. Look for patterns in your eating style. Do you give in to temptation whenever you see a fast food restaurant, or a commercial for a late night snack? Do you eat when you're bored, or do you eat unconsciously when you're tired? Do you keep eating once you've started, even when you're already full? Keep a journal of your eating habits for at least a week.

My next tip is to really familiarize yourself with the nutritional value of food, everything from vitamin content, to fiber and calorie count, to percentages of the daily requirements for minerals and protein. Purchase a simple book detailing the nutritional content of all of the basic foods - fruits, vegetables, pastas, etc. Then familiarize yourself with this knowledge, as well as knowing the actual size of a serving of each food type. Fortunately most food today comes already labeled with this information. Next make a trip to a good grocery store, one with the best and freshest produce. Fill your cart with real food, not prepackaged junk food. Fruit in season, vegetables, cheese, milk, pasta, lean meat, whole wheat bread, organic cereals - these are some of the items that will get you started. And make sure when you get home to clean out your fridge and cupboards of all the junk food.

Now it's time to start eating consciously. Do nothing else while you sit at a real table for your meal. Don't watch tv or read the newspaper. Do carry on low-key conversation or listen to soothing music. Pay attention to your body's signals that tell you when you're starting to feel full, and then stop eating. Scrape your plate into the disposal so you won't be tempted to eat the remains.

Now make healthy eating your daily habit. If you have a bad day and eat some junk food, relax, and get started back on the path to healthy eating immediately. Day by day your good habits will pay off in the form of lost weight, better health, and an overall feeling of wellness. Healthy eating is its own reward, so there is no reason not to get started today.
