A recent health scare made me begin researching eating more healthy meals. After years of eating meals that were not what I should have been eating I have now found that the healthier diet has shown me how tasty these meals are. I have begun eating a wider variety of foods including vegetables, whole grains and fruits. I am now eating less sugary foods and am keeping portions to a more moderate size.

When shopping with my wife we have begun to read the nutrition facts on food labels to ensure that we are only buying healthy food. Eating healthy foods is not difficult at all.  We are now eating mainly Fruits and Vegetables,  Whole Grains, Fat Free or Low Fat versions of dairy products, Nuts,  Lean Red Meats,  Skinless Chicken,Eggs,  Beans and Fish several times a week.

Fruits and vegetables should be part of every meal and you should eat at least five servings a day. They are full of vitamins and minerals and are low in calories. What stops you from eating five serves a day of this healthy food. Is it time for shopping, are they too expensive or do you just dislike fruit and vegetables?

Keep an eye out for canned or frozen fruit and vegetables. Eat fruit and vegetables that are in season - these are cheaper and more flavoursome. Don't try to build up to five serves overnight if you haven't been eating these for some time. Gradually build up and let your body adjust to the inclusion of these in your daily diet.

Watch out when cooking your vegetables that you don't smother them with sauces or dressings that may contain high fat content. Whole Grains provide long lasting and healthy carbohydrate energy. Avoid refined grains such as pasta, bread and breakfast cereals that are not whole grains.

Nuts, seeds beans and Tofu are alternative sources for healthy proteins. I am now also limiting my intake of alcohol. Instead I am drinking more water than before.

Studies have shown that many of us do not drink enough water. It is necessary so that  the body does not dehydrate. Watch out during exercise sessions that you are drinking enough water however some recent studies are now showing that some people who exercise are actually drinking too much water which in itself can cause serious health problems. Please be careful that you are drinking the correct amount of water and not overdoing it. You are in control of your eating habits.Cook healthy foods and exercise regularly to ensure you have a healthy life.
